Jaguars Fight to 1-1 Draw in Saturday Tilt With UHV
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M University-San Antonio Women's Soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against the Red River Athletics Conferences number two team. After giving up a first half goal to the University of Houston-Victoria, the Jaguars responded with the equalizer late in the second half.
Both teams were fairly even when it came to shots taken on the afternoon. A&M-San Antonio tallied 10 shots throughout the match while UHV took nine shots. Freshman Daniela Garcia (San Antonio) led the TAMUSA Jaguars with three shots on the day. One of the rookie's shots found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 with just over 20 minutes left to play. Sophomores Brooke Theis (Spokane, Washington) and Rheanna Lopez both took two shots on the day as well.
How It Happened
The TAMUSA offense earned a corner kick just a few minutes into the match but came away empty handed. Clara Strand from the UHV Jaguars responded by scoring the first goal of the match in the third minute. Shortly after, the A&M-San Antonio defense stepped up to put pressure on Houston-Victoria and force them to settle for shots. It wasn't until the 17th minute that Theis took the Jaguars first shot of the afternoon but it was saved by the UHV keeper.
TAMUSA fired away three more shots before the half but they were unable to score the equalizer heading into the half.
UHV put a shot on frame coming out of the half but sophomore keeper Maram Abdeljaber (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) made the save to keep the score at 1-0. A few moments later, Garcia put up a shot but it was just wide of the goal.
Both teams were pretty quiet until Theis found Garcia for the equalizer with just under 20 minutes of play left. With a new energy, the Jags continued to push forward but they were unable to score the go ahead goal. Sophomore Krystal Goytia (San Antonio, Texas/Clark) made a run at the goal in the 82nd minute and struck a ball that hit the crossbar. Despite the late push, neither team was able to pull away and the match resulted in a draw.
