Facility Overview
The Student Recreation Center (Rec Center) at Texas A&M University–San Antonio is a 22,322 square-foot multipurpose athletics and recreation facility designed to promote healthy living and student engagement on campus. The facility houses a full-sized gymnasium that includes a collegiate competition basketball court, the designated home court for the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as recreation-length courts that support informal play, intramural sports, and other special events. In addition to the gym space, the Rec Center features a dedicated fitness/weight room and locker rooms. It serves both varsity athletics and the broader campus community, hosting strength and conditioning activities, student recreation, university events, and fitness programs.
The Rec Center also supports general campus life, functioning as a versatile space for convocations, student organization events, fitness classes, and community engagement programs.

Who can use it
The Student Recreation Center and Gymnasium serves a wide range of campus users. It is the primary home facility for the TAMUSA men’s and women’s basketball teams, hosting team practices and official home games. Outside of varsity athletics, the gym and recreation spaces are open to TAMUSA students and to faculty and staff with appropriate access during posted operating hours. The facility also supports intramural sports, informal open play, and university-sponsored programs. In addition, the building may be scheduled for other institutional uses such as campus events and organized activities when available.
History
The Student Recreation Center opened in 2024 and represents a major expansion of recreational and athletic infrastructure at Texas A&M University–San Antonio. The facility was developed to strengthen student life on campus by providing modern fitness and recreation spaces and to establish a home for the university’s basketball programs. Funding for the project was primarily supported through student fees and was approved by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Since opening, the facility has become a focal point for student activity and athletic competition. A formal grand opening celebration was held in 2024, and the building hosted the first home games for the TAMUSA men’s and women’s basketball teams during the 2024 season.
Features & Amenities
The gymnasium within the Student Recreation Center is configured to support both intercollegiate competition and recreational use. The facility includes one full-length, 94-foot basketball competition court and two additional 84-foot recreational courts that can be used for open play, intramural activities, and training. The space can also be adapted for other court sports such as volleyball. Seating within the gym accommodates approximately 900 spectators for basketball games and special events. Men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers and restroom facilities are located within the building and support both recreational users and athletic activity.
Fan & Visitor Information
Fans and visitors enter the gymnasium through the main public entrance of the Student Recreation Center, which is located along the central campus pedestrian areas and is easily accessible from University Way and surrounding walkways. Parking for events and daily use is provided through general university parking areas, and standard TAMUSA parking policies apply. Spectator seating is provided in general bleacher-style seating around the gym floor. Restrooms are available to visitors to the left as you come through the main entrance. The facility was built with accessibility in mind, allocating seating for people with disabilities along with seating for a companion.
JagFit – Fitness & Wellness Program
JagFit is Texas A&M University–San Antonio’s structured fitness and wellness program offered through Recreational Sports and based in the Student Recreation Center. The program focuses on helping students, faculty, and staff build healthy, sustainable habits through guided training, education, and community-based fitness opportunities. JagFit offers personal training with customized workout plans, fitness consultations, and optional nutritional coaching. The program also provides a variety of group fitness classes held in campus fitness studios, giving participants access to instructor-led workouts designed for different experience and fitness levels.
Throughout the academic year, JagFit hosts campus-wide fitness challenges and skill-based events that encourage participation, friendly competition, and overall wellness. The program also offers equipment orientations in the Recreation Center fitness area to help users safely and confidently use training equipment. JagFit serves as a key component of the university’s commitment to student well-being and complements the Recreation Center’s role as a central hub for health, fitness, and recreation on campus.
